Suzy Birstein

 

 

Myth & Stillness brings together the dynamic figurative sculptures of Suzy Birstein and the meditative paintings of June Yun: two artists who, in different ways, respond to inner landscapes shaped by history, memory, and the shifting rhythms of the world around them.

 

Birstein’s richly ornamented clay sculptures reimagine iconic women artists like Frida Kahlo and Leonora Carrington and Tamara de Lempicka as mythic figures. Embellished with allegorical details, such as birds, flowers, creatures, and keepsakes, these works evolve into tactile narratives that celebrate feminine creativity and resilience, as Birstein weaves a compelling personal mythology.

In contrast, Yun’s paintings offer quiet reflection. Emerging from the slowed-down days of the pandemic, her works dwell on water, clouds, and blossoms—symbols of serenity and presence. Her minimal, tranquil compositions speak to the value of stillness and inner clarity in a world that often overwhelms.

Together, Birstein and Yun explore how women engage with their environments, whether through myth-making or the pursuit of inner peace, and how each path offers a powerful form of freedom.
